giving gifts

One of my students sent the following to me and I would like to share it with you:

"Health is the greatest of all the goods; satisfaction is the greatest treasure we may possess; gathering in our own spirit is, par excellence, the biggest of the true friends”.

Wishing you all the very best for the holiday season and new year 2015......

Venerable Namgyel and all at Song River Dharma Ashram.

Delhi to Varanasi

Firstly, let me wish all of my students and those I am connected to, a very meaningful and peaceful Christmas.  I think if we understood the compassion of Jesus and Buddha, our lives would be so different.......around the world, there is still a lot of emphasis given to Christmas, on giving presents, eating lots of food, drinking etc. but let's take a moment to recall all the people who are suffering in extreme situations.  You know who I am talking about, the refugees wherever they are, those in war zones etc.  I don't need to enumerate them to you, as you know about them through the news.

However, do we stop and give a few moments during Christmas to develop compassion and love towards them?  It might be a good idea for us to donate towards those who are needy rather than giving another object to somebody who already has a house full of objects!

Students often write to me, asking what they can do to develop their Dharma practice.  Give up your clinging attachment and develop and grow the open, loving, compassionate heart.  That's all!!  Yes, tall order perhaps, a lot to ask, but possible to do, especially at this time of year, when there is so much emphasis of it being a time of loving and giving.  Let's spread that loving and giving to those we don't know, we don't necessarily care about, and at least pray for their well being and happiness, not just now but forever.

Thank you.  Big love.  Ven Namgyel.
ps I attended HH's teachings in Delhi, thanks to the kindness of the Russians.  Now in Varanasi on the way to Bodh Gaya for a few days, then back to Rishikesh and Song River.

My Guru's passing away

It was very sad to hear about Geshe Tekchog passing away recently.  Before that Denmo Locho Rinpoche and before that Geshe Sopa.  These were great Lamas educated in Tibet - let's pray for their quick return to benefit countless suffering sentient beings.  Thank you.

On another note, I just posted an update on my teaching schedule for next year.  Looking forward to meeting you, wherever you are!

sad news

I am very sorry to inform you all that Denmo Locho Rinpoche passed away on the 23rd October 2014.  He was a very inspiring Guru to me and thousands of others.....
Today we finish Medicine Buddha at Tushita Dharamsala and I travel back to Rishikesh this evening.

Rishikesh-McLeod Ganj today

Leaving a colder, rainy Rishikesh for what I would imagine is an even colder Tushita Meditation Centre, where we start the Medicine Buddha Retreat on Thursday.  Sorry, there's not much more news than that!  If you come and join us at Song River over the new year, I shall see you there, otherwise, think seriously about joining us for the Vajrasattva Retreat - we may not be able to offer any more, as all the perfect causes and conditions need to be present (including you!)  With big love, Venerable Namgyel.

Song River new year

Song River Dharma Ashram decided it would be good to offer individual retreat facilities over new year, from around the 30th December, whether for a few days or more, with special guidance by myself.  If you are interested and would like to participate, or you have a question, please contact:  SongRiverAshram@gmail.com  or phone Sonam on 91 789 580 3367.

RISHIKESH Song River Dharma Ashram

One of my students suggested we could have a group retreat or people could do individual retreats after HH's teachings in South India.  I was happy to agree and I would either lead the retreat or guide individuals.  Two languages would be used, Russian and English.  Starting around the 30th December for a week or ten days.
If you are interested, please contact me personally.  Ven Namgyel.

September 2014

I apologise for taking so long to write, but in the beginning there was nothing to say, only monsoon talk, rain, no rain, rain, no rain!  Recently I travelled from Rishikesh to Dharamsala and taught a workshop on Healing Disturbing Emotions.  Out of 33 people, 14 took Refuge, which is amazing.  Unbelievable, as Rinpoche would say.  Near the end of September, I teach an introduction course at Tushita followed by Medicine Buddha.
Song river joined a new site to advertise retreats and workshops, here is the link for the Vajrasattva retreat:   http://www.retreatnetwork.com/event/vajrasattva-retreat-2015/

Choeding Rinpoche's wish

Before Rinpoche passed away it was His strong wish to build a school for the young monks, to ensure they have a good secular as well as spiritual education.  Due to the hard work and dedication of Venerable Jampa, that wish is turning into a reality.
The foundation is done and the pillars are currently being put in for a three storey building to house and educate the monks.
Unfortunately, the monastery does not have wealthy sponsors, so they are doing this through very small donations.  If you would like to help financially, please let me know.  They would be very grateful.
If you are in the Pokhara, Nepal area, I am sure you would be a welcome visitor.  The name of the school is going to be Gachoe Thoesam.

New project news

To accumulate merit and benefit those who pass by and look at the Song River building, I would like to put two deer and a Dharma wheel on top of the gate.  Estimated cost is two hundred euro, and should be finished before the Tibetan new year.
This project is fully funded and nearly finished - thank you so much to all who helped.

Vajrasattva retreat

The surprising news is that the retreat is going very well, without any problems!  The group settled down really quickly and have expressed many times to me personally, that they are so happy to be here and they like the location at the base of the Himalayas and next to the river.  Ven Tenpa and Ven Tenzin are working hard leading the group and I have interviews with four retreaters every day.  A very good and auspicious beginning to Song River being a retreat venue.

Vajrasattva Retreat at Song River

Well, we had an interesting start to the retreat - of course the weather had to change - it had been quite warm and sunny till the 15th January and then the fog appeared, the clouds appeared and the rain came down!  All day Saturday we had thunder and lightning and then at sunset two beautiful rainbows appeared, curving down into the Ganges.  The group is doing really well, I think.  They seem to be adjusting to the schedule and precepts every day and I rejoice in their determination and enthusiasm.  We have people from Australia, Finland, Sweden, Russia and Mexico, so it is quite a mixed group.  I will keep you updated on what is happening as we go along.  Ven Namgyel.
